NGO Seeks details from Khazanah over Pos Malaysia losses

The Star Tuesday May 4, 2010
PETALING JAYA: Malay NGO Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) wants Khazanah to explain why Pos Malaysia Bhd suffered RM546mil in losses.
“We want to know which individual or organisation benefited from the loss because it is also important that Malaysians know about it,” JMM chairman Azwand-din Hamzah said in a statement yesterday.
The group backed the statement by former Pos Malaysia and Services Holdings Bhd chairman Tan Sri Adam Kadir, who had asked Pos Malaysia to explain the losses.
Adam, who was chairman from 2005 to 2008, alleged that Khazanah’s recent announcement on the strategic sale of Pos Malaysia was to cover up weaknesses when RM800mil was taken out from the company’s reserve.
Azwanddin also urged Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, who was in charge of the Economic Planning Unit, and Khazanah managing director Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar to give details about the losses.
Nor Mohamed had transferred Pos Malaysia Bhd from the Finance Ministry to Khazanah in 2006.
Azwanddin also called for an explanation on the criteria considered for the appointment of CEOs of government-linked companies (GLCs). He claimed that many GLCs appointed CEOs from Dana Harta Bhd.
“If important appointments in GLCs are made based on friendship or working relationships, this will portray a negative impression on such government appointments,” he said.
Azwanddin also wanted to know the criteria for the appointment of several CEOs including Datuk Azman Yahya, Datuk Bakke Salleh, Datuk Zukri Samad, Datuk Ismee Ismail, Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad, Datuk Sharil Ridza Ridzuan, Datuk Ahmad Zulqarnaian Onn, Datuk Idrose Mohamed and Datuk Fazrul Rahman Ebrahim.
