MCMC probe JMM claim on Malaysian Insider

Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) Malaysian Insider ...that MI sponsors are seeking to bring down government

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation based on allegations made by Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) over the funding for the Malaysian Insider news portal.

An MCMC spokesman told The Malay Mail the commission's investigation department had called in persons relevant to the case to give their statements.

However, the commission declined further information on the number of people which had and would be called up to assist the investigations.

Asked about the progress of the probe and what was contained in the 20-page report made by JMM, it also declined to comment as investigations were ongoing.

No further information was also given on how long would the investigation take place.

In the report, JMM alleged the sponsors behind the Malaysian Insider had used money obtained by securing government's contracts to bring down the government.

JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah Mail told The Paper That Cares he and two other members were called up by the MCMC to give their statements yesterday at 10am.

"I was called up on Tuesday at 2pm and I spent around two hours yesterday to assist the investigation."

Azwanddin said the MCMC officers seemed satisfied with his statement and said the investigation paper would be prepared under Section 233 of the MCMC Act which covers improper use of network service, among others.

On the JMM report submitted to the MCMC, he said it was related to slanderous elements implicating Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor as well.

In addition, he also handed in articles and materials which allegedly associated the online news portal with militant Indonesian group Bendera and its leaders.

Declining to comment further, he said: "For now, we'll have to wait and see."
