KUALA LUMPUR: Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) held a peaceful protest here yesterday to condemn the Bar Council's prejudiced political stand and failure to carry out its professional duties.
JMM president Azwanddin Hamzah said they tried to hand over a memorandum to the council but were not allowed to meet any of its members.
However, they were told by security personnel to leave the memorandum at the front counter, which they did.
Azwanddin said they were giving the council a week to respond to the memorandum.
Speaking to reporters outside the National Bar Council building in Jalan Leboh Pasar Besar, he said JMM had proof of council members aligning themselves with certain political parties.
Azwanddin added that if the council failed to respond to its memorandum within a week, it would reveal the details.
"The Bar Council should be independent of political intervention to allow it to safeguard the people's interest.
"Its constant calls for greater justice within the Malaysian judiciary appears to be false and mere rhetoric."
The memorandum also called on the Bar to apologise to Malaysians for having taken a prejudiced stand on several issues.
Azwanddin added that the Bar should focus on solving cases involving errant lawyers to safeguard the credibility of the country's law fraternity.
